Meyer Closings Attends Atlanta Board of Realtors Showcase 2009
On Wednesday, August 19, 2009 real estate agents, mortgage lenders, real estate service providers and Meyer Closings, LLC descended upon the Cobb Galleria Centre for a day of inspiration, education and networking at the Atlanta Board of Realtors Showcase 2009.
Highlights of the day included over 200 trade-show booths and informative seminars (including a presentation by U.S. Senator Johnny Isakson).
Meyer Closings, LLC held a drawing at our booth for a brand new 19" Philips Flat-Screen TV. We had over 300 entries, but the lucky winner was Rob Glancy with Rate Capital, Inc.
Thank you to everyone who entered. The event was wonderful and we saw lots of our current clients and met several new contacts. We look forward to working with each of you in the future on your residential and commercial real estate closing needs.
Meyer Closings, LLC is FDIC Approved Outside Counsel
Meyer Closings, LLC has been approved by the FDIC (Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation) as Outside Counsel. The FDIC preserves and promotes public confidence in the U.S. financial system by insuring deposits in banks and thrift institutions up $250,000. The FDIC was created in 1933 in response to the thousands of bank failures that occurred in the 1920s and early 1930s. Since the start of the FDIC insurance on January 1, 1934, no depositor has lost insured funds as a result of a bank failure.
New Rules for Capital Gains on Sale of Residence
Effective January 1, 2009, Congress has enacted new legislation that will reduce the amount of gain that can be excluded on the sale of a primary residence. Prior to January 1, 2009, if a house was used as a primary residence for two of the past five years, single individuals could exempt up to $250,000 of capital gain. Married couples filing jointly could exempt up to $500,000. Under the new law, the amount of gain that can be exempted is reduced by the amount of time that the house was not used as a primary residence. For example, if a married couple purchased a home and used the home as a rental property for the first three years and then later occupied a home as their primary residence for the next two years, they could exempt only 2 out of the 5 years or 40% of $500,000 or $200,000 from capital gains tax. It is important to note that there are several exceptions to the new law. For instance, for time periods prior to January 1, 2009 where a residence is not used as a primary residence do not count against the exemption from capital gain. Also, property that is first used as a primary residence and then later converted to another use, such as investment property, is not affected by the new law. One last note, if you acquire property under a '1031 exchange and use it as your primary residence, you must own the property for five years in order to qualify for the capital gains exemption. 2008 Sandy Springs Festival - A Huge Success!
Andy Meyer, Managing Partner of Meyer Closings, LLC, served as the Honorary Chair for the 23rd Annual Sandy Springs Festival. The two-day Festival attracted more than 22,000 people who enjoyed a variety of activities, events and entertainment opportunities.
The Festival is the largest fundraiser for Heritage Sandy Springs, a 501(c)3 non-profit organization located in the heart of the city of Sandy Springs. Heritage Sandy Springs’ mission is to preserve and promote the historic and cultural identity of Sandy Springs. The non-profit organization presents programs and events on behalf of the community throughout the year, including the Festival, Concerts by the Springs, Wind Down Wednesdays, Ghostly Gathering, Light the Lights and more. The organization also runs Heritage Green which includes the Sandy Springs Historic Site, Williams-Payne House Museum and the Sandy Springs Society Entertainment Lawn.
In addition to his duties as Honorary Chair, Andy had the honor of introducing The Tams to perform a special concert on Saturday night of the Festival. The group performed hits including “Be Young, Be Foolish, Be Happy” and “What Kind of Fool” to a crowd of over 1,500 people.
As the proud sponsor of the 2008 Sandy Springs Festival Silent Auction, Meyer Closings, LLC, raised over $15,000 to benefit Heritage Sandy Springs. Ginny Nickles, Melissa Mills and Andy Meyer staffed the Silent Auction along with several wonderful community volunteers. Items such as college memorabilia, a trip to Italy, restaurant gift certificates, craft items and home decorations were auctioned off over the 2-day event.

Andy Meyer honored with Leadership Sandy Springs Award
Andy Meyer was honored at the 2008 Leadership Sandy Springs Graduation and Alumni Recognition event with the ‘Distinguished Alum’ award for commitment and service to the Sandy Springs community. Leadership Sandy Springs (LSS) is a nexus for all sectors of the community; it is where business, government, nonprofits, the religious community and citizen leaders come together to learn, grow and engage with each other to make the community the best possible place to live, work and visit. Andy graduated with the 1998-99 class and has taken the numerous lessons learned in LSS and applied them to various initiatives throughout the community. He is actively involved and volunteering with Holy Innocents Episcopal School and Church as well as serving on the Heritage Sandy Springs Membership Committee, chairing the 2007 and 2008 Sandy Springs Festival Silent Auction, serving as the Honorary Chair of the 2008 Sandy Springs Festival and several other civic groups.
